Question, Persuade, ReferBetween 2012-2014, Harford County's suicide rate was 11.6 per 100,000 population, which is much higher than the rate in Maryland (9.2 per 100,000 population, VSA). In an effort to bring suicide rates down in Harford County, the Suicide Prevention Workgroup, a subcommittee of the LHIC's Behavioral Health Workgroup, is looking to train interested community members as "Gatekeepers" in QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer). QPR Gatekeepers learn how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help when there is a suicide risk. The free 1-hour QPR Gatekeeper training can be offered to agencies, community organizations, congregations, employers, etc., for both professionals and lay people in identifying and responding to suicide risk. If you are interested in attending or hosting a QPR Gatekeeper training, please call Susan Lichtfuss (410) 638-5248.
